Preparing Surfaces for Instant Adhesives

Preparing Surfaces for Instant Adhesives

Preparing Surfaces for Instant Adhesives

Different materials need different series or combinations of cleaning, degreasing, abrasion, immersion, or specialty treatments to ensure the best surface for bonding. Although there are variances to every material, we have listed some general guidelines below. For inquiries about using instant adhesives on specific materials, contact our experts at Invertech Canada Inc.

If the surface is smooth, you can apply less glue. It’s always best to use minimal amount of glue to minimize the bubbles or dust caught in the glue, meaning less stress points and avoiding the chances of failure.

Some materials or instant glue might shrink. If the surface is not smooth, shrinking can cause gaps, and consequently, stress points. This can be minimized with clamping the joining surfaces to keep the surfaces in contact while glue shrinks.

Preparing Plastic

Some plastics require a combination of degreasing, abrasion, immersion, and flame treatment. In general, plastics usually go through degreasing, rinsing or cleaning, immersion, and finally cleaning and drying. Plastics that require abrasion need to be degreased before and after the abrasive process.

Prepare Copper

Copper needs a black oxide finish, which can be done at a specialist metal finishing company. Alternatively, a suitable bonding surface can be a completely clean copper surface prepared with copper cleaner or copper alloy cleaner, rinse with distilled water, dry with paper towel or rinse with isopropyl alcohol. However, without the black oxide finish, the instant adhesive must be applied within 30 to 60 minutes because the surface will oxidize within 2 hours.

Prepare Aluminum

Degrease aluminum with an aluminum-safe degreaser and prepare the surface with Alodine to prevent corrosion and help the instant adhesive bond.

Prepare Glass

Degrease the glass with organic solvents and coat in adhesive primer before applying instant adhesive.

Prepare Steel

Clean the steel with paraffin, and then white spirit. Abrading the surface is optional, but make sure to degrease and rinse prior to using the instant adhesive.

Thanks Would be nice to have a list of materials that usually shrinks.
