How to Choose the Right Gloves to Protect Against Epoxy Resins

Gloves are the most basic personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect your hands from toxic substances. However, not all gloves keep you safe from over-exposure to epoxy resins. Compared to resin, structural epoxy does not cure quickly, so it is crucial to use the right gloves that protect your hands at all costs.

 

Here are some key factors to consider while choosing gloves to protect from structural epoxy:  

 

Chemical Resistance

 

It can be difficult to find gloves that could protect one from all types of chemicals. Thus, it is important to know the chemicals present in the epoxy resin system in order to select the appropriate safety gloves. Contact to hardeners, solvents, and fillers can cause skin problems. So, choose the glove that will give you the maximum protection from the ingredients in the mixture. 

Generally, nitrile gloves offer protection against epoxies and solvents. Cotton or latex gloves are not recommended since they tend to absorb chemicals, allowing them to reach the skin.

 

Permeation and Degradation

 

Another safety factor to consider is the permeation and degradation of the gloves. Since chemicals can permeate the glove material and contact the skin, always chose gloves with low permeability against the chemicals you handle. On the other hand, constant exposure to epoxy resins could degrade the glove material. If the degradability of the gloves is not ideal to handle epoxies, consider changing gloves regularly before signs of permeation or degradation occur. 

 

Task Requirements

 

When choosing the right gloves, always consider the tasks involved in mixing or applying the adhesive. Does the task require grip or manual dexterity? Will the application expose your gloves to punctures, cuts, and abrasions? Should you protect the forearms from the toxic substances present in the epoxy? Also, consider wearing gloves that perfectly fit your hands to prevent direct contact with epoxy chemicals.  

 

Reusable vs. Disposable Gloves

 

Disposable gloves could be a convenient choice for handling epoxies. However, if they are not disposed of immediately after use, they can expose your hands to harmful substances causing serious damage. If you prefer reusable gloves, make sure to clean them after every use. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper care and maintenance.
