Formulating the Perfect Adhesive

Formulating the Perfect Adhesive

Cyanoacrylate adhesives, or most commonly known as instant adhesives, are a general type of adhesives that are able to cure very fast. They are comprised of cyanoacrylates which generally include methyl cyanoacrylate, among other chemicals. The formulations of this adhesive usually include different stabilizers to inhibit premature polymerization of the adhesive inside its container. It also includes thickeners that are important for easy application as they control the viscosity of the adhesive as well as help facilitate good bonding between substrates. Cyanoacrylate formulation also includes promoters that help hasten the polymerization rate of the cyanoacrylates.

When it comes to perfecting the best formula for instant adhesives, both aging and stability are also crucial factors to consider as they can be a hinder in promoting proper curing.

In general, cyanoacrylates have a shelf life of around one year from the manufacturing date if left unopened in its container and only one month if opened. The issue of aging can increase the adhesive’s viscosity which causes it to thicken and thus, cure more slowly than expected. This is why control over increased viscosity is so important as it will improve the ability of the adhesive to counter the adverse effects of aging and stability. It can also enhance the performance of the adhesive.

In order to determine the aging of instant adhesives, tests can be done which involves keeping the container of the adhesive’s formulation at a specified temperature and relative humidity for a certain period of time to estimate its shelf life. The samples are periodically removed from the aging environment and will be tested for various parameters, including viscosity, moisture, setting time, and adhesive strength. The setting time can be defined as the amount of time the adhesive needs to be cured to a bond so that it cannot be easily broken by hand. This is why there is a need for a cyanoacrylate adhesive formulation that prolongs its shelf life without compromising curing.

At Invertech, we make sure to supply only the best adhesive products that provide a fine balance of strength and shelf life. Check out our website to learn more about our products!
