Chemicals Used with Industrial-Grade Sealants

Adhesives are used for the purpose of forming and effectively maintaining a bond between two surfaces. Certain adhesives and sealants are used to fill the gaps between two surface materials – preventing liquids, solids, or gases through.

 

Chemical solutions are used in tandem with adhesives and sealants to enhance their performance and manipulate the desired end result.

 

Adhesive accelerators, primers, and anaerobic conditioners, activators, and cleaners are all examples of chemical mixtures used with adhesives and sealants for enhanced performance. Today we’ll briefly overview these chemicals and how they enhance the overall performance of the adhesive or sealant initially used.

 

Adhesive Accelerators

 

When used with the appropriate adhesive, as its name suggests – adhesive accelerators can speed up cure time. The accelerator is applied to the material substrate and works to increase adhesion by beginning the cure period before the adhesive undergoes absorption by the material.

 

Adhesive Primers

 

Primers are used as a preliminary treatment of the material surface before adhesive or sealant application to enhance adhesion. Certain primers are formulated for specific surface applications, so it’s essential to do your research before committing to a primer purchase.  

 

Anaerobic Surface Conditioners

 

Anaerobic surface conditioners are used only in instances where metal ions are present. As some metals tend to be more reactive than others, application of an anaerobic surface conditioner can effectively ensure adhesion and enhance cure speed on the non-metal surface.

 

Adhesive Activators

 

Adhesive activators – also known as adhesive initiators – are adhesion catalysts. In chemistry, a catalyst is known as a substance that fastens the occurrence of a chemical reaction without being consumed by the reaction. Activator application largely depends on type of adhesive used – and when used properly can improve cure time, adhesion, and adhesive strength.

 

Cleaners

 

Contrary to popular belief, cleaning solutions are used to clean up adhesive spills – not clean surfaces that are to be bonded. Industrial cleaners and solvents are specially formulated to break down adhesives in the event of a spill.

 

 


I'll definitely be considering an adhesive accelerator for getting the most out of any adhesion I need done in the future.
