Chemicals that Can Be Used in Conjunction with Adhesives

Chemicals that Can Be Used in Conjunction with Adhesives

Just like other chemicals, the working properties of industrial adhesives can be highly affected by both the temperature and humidity of the environment of its cured and even uncured state. This is why it’s crucial to take into account those environmental factors when applying an adhesive.

Fortunately, there are different chemicals that you can use in conjunction with the adhesive in order to achieve your desired results.

These include primers, adhesive accelerators, activators, and more. The specific requirements of your applications will dictate the right selection of the most suitable chemical to use for your adhesive. In order to help you choose the right product, here is a brief summary of each of those chemicals.

Primers: this is a kind of a coating that is used to change the qualities of a surface in order for the industrial adhesive to adhere better. It helps increase the ability of the adhesive to wet out the surfaces that are to be bonded. Do keep in mind that every adhesive type may require a different kind of primer. This means while a certain primer can increase the adhesion properties of an instant adhesive, it may not be applicable for epoxy or other types of adhesives.

Accelerators: as the name suggests, an adhesive accelerator is used to speed up the cure time of an adhesive. However, there are some cases in which bond strength would be traded off. This is the case when using industrial adhesives on a very porous substrate. Before the adhesive is totally absorbed by the material, the use of an adhesive accelerator can hasten the cure time, increasing the adhesion but now allowing it to achieve its full bond strength. Thus, make sure you use the right accelerator depending on the material or substrate you want to bond.

Activators: also known as initiators, activators are a form of catalysts that are utilized along with two-part adhesives. They are very specific to the kind of adhesive to be used so you have to be careful about the product you choose as well.

No matter what kind of adhesive you are looking for, Invertech Canada has got you covered. Make sure you check out our products on our website!
